The small hamlet of Tampitiya is located in the Ampara district bordering Batticaloa, about thirteen kilometers from Maho along the A5 highway. It is very close to ‘Aranthalawa', where the massacre of a group of novice monks at the hands of the Tiger Terrorists took place some time ago. This and other small villages in the area have repeatedly suffered due to the separatist violence during the past twenty years. They get some sense of security from the nearby presence of the Special Task Force (STF) post of the Sri Lanka Police. The guidance of the chief incumbent monk of the Tampitiya Raja Maha Vihara hasencouraged the villagers to stay on and go about their traditional livelihood of paddy cultivation, disregarding the ever-present danger of terrorist attacks.
Early in year 2002, CAUS was contacted by a community based NGO who carry out humanitarian work in the Eastern province and various other places in Sri Lanka. This group, ‘Success - Wayamba' informed us that they have initiated a project to build and donate a Community Health Office for the use of the populace in and around Tampitiya. Medical doctors who are members of ‘Success' have visited the village several times before and held free Health camps for the benefit of the people in this area, who live in utter hardship. ‘Success' invited CAUS to co-sponsor this project by financing the construction of the Community Health Office.
After evaluating the merits of the project, CAUS decided to support this project financially. We contributed a total sum of approx Rs. 60,000.00, in two installments. This contribution was about 20 percent of the total cost of the building. The project leaders of ‘Success' raised the balance money from various other generous people in Sri Lanka.
In addition to the cost of building materials, a large number of people have contributed free labour for this project. They included, but are not limited to, the ‘Success' volunteers, officers and men of the Sri Lanka Police, the villagers of Tampitiya, the abbot and the resident monks at the temple Tampitiya purana raja maha Vihara, medical officers attached to the Maha Oya base hospital and many others.
The project was successfully completed and the Community Health Office was officially handed over to the Sri Lanka Ministry of Health, for conducting regular clinics, on the 19th of July 2002.
